Anxiety

1444020011Why are you suffering from anxiety?

Anxiety is a constant fight, flight, or freeze response.

Your brain and body are on constant alert – making you feel unsafe. To help you feel safe, your mind desperately tries to find a solution – but nothing you try or think about is working.

Although you keep trying to find a way to control or change what is causing your anxiety, you cannot, so your anxiety never ends.

What can trigger your anxiety?

Perhaps your son or daughter does not respond to your text, so you worry about something terrible happening.

After saying something to your boss, you worry about getting fired.

Worries about the state of the world keep you up at night, especially since so many awful things are happening right now.

You may have tried ways to get relief – perhaps binge-watching a Netflix series, drinking, or overeating. These strategies may work for a short time but tend to wear off quickly – and the yucky or guilty feelings return.

Anxiety medication may have provided some relief, but the side effects are worse than the cure.

Previous therapy may have helped you manage symptoms temporarily, but your anxiety persisted.

Feeling anxious seems like a never-ending experience. Each morning you arise with a pit in your stomach, feeling overwhelmed, nervous, and confused throughout the day. Every day consists of second-guessing and regrets about your choices and their consequences.

There are underlying causes of anxiety.

Anxiety results from incredible and painful experiences that can create enormous suffering.

Those experiences can persist, causing your brain to misinterpret what’s happening around you.

When something reminds you of that experience, your brain triggers a flight, fight, or freeze response, even though there is no danger.

That flight, fight, or freeze response creates stress – your heart begins to race, making it feel like a heart attack. Panic sets in, and you feel out of control, like you are about to go crazy.

It is possible to overcome anxiety. As therapists, we help clients learn techniques to teach their brain and nervous system to go from a flight, fight, or freeze to a relaxation response – where you feel calm, grounded, and at ease, even with a sense of deep peace.

I will teach you mind-body tools you can use throughout the day to help your body go from a flight, fight, or freeze response to a calm state of relaxation.

Although an anxious response to real danger helped hunter-gatherers flee from danger, like a saber tooth tiger, the design of our nervous system is to be calm and relaxed unless a genuine emergency arises. We function optimally in a calm and relaxed state – like “going with the flow.”

Through our work together, you can rewire your brain to experience your day-to-day life in an effortless and peaceful flow state.

The first step is identifying the root cause.

We will work collaboratively to unearth the deeper causes of your anxiety. We have learned that the roots of anxiety go back very far – to the first few years of your life.

You develop anxiety over time to cope with painful experiences that overwhelm your nervous system.

Even if you had good parents, they were not always fully present. As an infant or toddler, you needed constant reassurance that you were safe. You felt unsafe and terrified when something dangerous happened, and your parents may have failed to provide emotional comfort. Today, you may still hold those feelings in your mind and body.

Anxiety is a coping mechanism that can cause a great deal of suffering. Still, it helps cover up or protect you from re-experiencing the deeper cause of your anxiety, especially when your nervous system becomes overwhelmed by fear and terror.
