Coping doesn’t get rid of weeds.
The issues that brought you into therapy – anxiety, depression, etc. – are coping mechanisms that you developed at some point in your life to deal with deeper emotional hurts you suffered when you were younger and more vulnerable. This coping helped you avoid and get through those painful emotional experiences.
While gardening, you may have noticed that when you tried to pull up the weeds by the leaves, the weeds just kept coming back.
Eventually, I figured out that only when I pulled up the roots of the weeds did I no longer get those weeds growing back.
In TRET just like with weeds, we get to the root causes of the issues you are struggling with – negative emotions, self-doubts, negative beliefs about yourself such as “I am unlovable” or “I am worthless,” self-sabotaging behaviors, self-judgments, etc. by identifying and releasing the deeper causes of those symptoms.
Remove the weeds and remove the pain.
Once you let go of the root causes in your body, your symptoms are no longer needed to protect you from those painful emotional experiences, and you no longer experience them.
To ensure that your symptoms, such as anxiety or depression, do not return, we take it a step further by cutting the cord between the early adverse experiences and traumatic memories that lead to your symptoms and the symptoms themselves.
For example, if you experience feelings of abandonment and panic when your wife or husband does not respond to your text, you may have had parents who were often late picking you up at school. So now, you may have developed a conditioned response between these two events. In other words, when your wife or husband does not respond to your text, it triggers the memory of your parents doing something similar in your childhood, bringing up feelings of abandonment and panic.
In TRET, we dissolve the connection between the past painful memories and how they get triggered in your present life. After this TRET treatment, the next time your husband or wife does not respond to your text immediately, you may feel slightly annoyed but no longer panicked.
Find your True Self.
In TRET, we help you remember and access the part of yourself that has never felt hurt emotionally – the Center or True Self. You probably had brief moments when you experienced joy or well-being despite all the troubles, negative experiences, or events in your life. Perhaps you experienced this while taking a nature walk, petting your dog or cat, or possibly giving or receiving a hug.
In TRET, guided visualizations and meditations will help you reconnect to your more profound well-being. This deeper part never experienced wounds, but you lost connection to this part, your True Self. We will use methods to help you reconnect.
